Who can participate in the caucus?
Any person who is eligible to vote in the state of Iowa and will be at least 18 years old on Election Day, November 6, 2018, may participate in the Iowa Caucuses. These individuals must reside in the precinct in which they wish to participate, and they must be registered as a Democrat—party registration is available on caucus night.
What happens at a 2018 Caucus?
The purpose of the 2018 Caucus is to: elect delegates and alternates to the County Convention, elect precinct committee members to represent the precinct on the County Central Committee, discuss and vote on platform resolutions to send to the County Platform Committee, and to get organized as a precinct for the upcoming elections. The agenda will generally be:
- Welcome by a Site Leader
- Party Business
- Elect Precinct Chair and Secretary
- Elect Delegates and Alternates
- Elect Precinct Committee Members
- Discuss Platform Resolutions
Will there be preference groups?
In non-presidential caucus years, preference groups are not required and are usually not formed. Delegates may be elected by preference group only if at least 15% of caucus attendees in a precinct agree to do so. A preference group can be around candidates for any office or issue.
